AI Generated malware arrives on the scene

Generative AI has been one of the big changes to the internet in recent years. All kinds of content, both harmless and harmful has hit the web. Though this particular new trend has been showcasing the potential danger in unregulated AI programs. Malware that can write and email its self. Just recently HP detected an email campaign consisting of standard off the shelf malware delivered by an automated email creation system.

Upon inspection they discovered a number of unusual markers that made this malware different. These oddities flagged it for inspection by the HP team. They quickly determined that it was AI generated. The AI left comments in the script for the human operating the malware, indicating this was a novice. This indicated that AI may not just be delivering the emails or writing them, they could be making malware too. They also believe that a inexperienced user used this AI program to commit an attack they otherwise would not be able to.

The fact that this novice used this technology to make their own software could likely mean that more advanced users already are making use of these tools. though that largely unprovable. The biggest danger right now is that AI tools lower the barrier for entry. New hackers who would otherwise be restricted by their lack of skill can now use this crutch to achieve some success, and cause at least some damage to users. Now more than ever it crucial to be wary of links and emails of all kinds. We may be seeing alot more phishing emails in the future.

FTC Discloses Mass surveillance by social media companies

The FTC recently conducted an inquiry regarding major social media and streaming companies data collection practices. The report describes the deep level of information gathering on all types of users and even non-users, including minors. The companies tracked behavior, activity, interests, even demographic information of visitors. The FTC took the stance that this was a predatory environment for consumers, and these services “pose a unique risk to children and teens”.

The FTC looked at nine major companies such as Amazon, meta, Twitter/x and others. They found that while some companies have taken steps to protects users they are few and far between. Consumers are often tracked without warning and for long after they have left the site or service in question. Though companies spying on your data is nothing new to the public, the reality of how pervasive it is may still shock some people.

The FTC commissioner Alvaro Bedoya noted in a separate statement that most of this companies are already forced to protect user privacy in Europe, due to GDPR regulations. They have just chosen not to implement that for Americans and others based on financial incentive, collecting countless terabytes of non-European users data without control. It is not clear whether the commission will enforce new standards on these companies in the short term, however they did indicate a desire to restrict data collection. It will be interesting to see if the U.S goes the same way Europe did with a heavy focus on user privacy.
