VPNs Are Under Attack, AI in Brute Defense

VPNs are not secure as you thought!

VPNs or Virtual Private Networks are used to keep data and connection info private. These have many practical uses such as companies using them to have employees connect to their job from home. The main reason people use VPNs is to keep their online footsteps off the trail and prevent private or financial data loss. With how much you see VPN ads online boasting about privacy you would think they are safe for the average user.

This is unfortunately further from the truth.

This form of network suffers from various issues, many an everyday occurrence. It was only recently that we had seen an Australian company in the news lose millions of user’s data to hackers due to a VPN spoof happening to a IT employee. This is a great example of just how brutal any amount of tech debt can be as it was found that the company used a months old build of it’s VPN.

Not only are they susceptible to spoofing, they also fall victim to simple flaws such as a website or service not using HTTPS (SSL/TLS encryption), meaning your data could be intercepted by malicious actors.

AI has risen to the defense!

In a world filled with vast fear of AI, it’s great to be able to say it does have its perks. To counter a threat that can change itself to deal with a situation, you need an adaptable counter. Why not repurpose AI to protect?

Companies across the globe sought just that by tackling the ongoing arms race between blue and red teams by bringing AI to the defense. A great example is IBM, one of the oldest companies in the tech scene. They’ve created a suite of tools and algorithms that you can use to boost your cybersecurity fortifications.

You’ll also start to notice more and more anti-virus/malware software’s will begin working on their own suite of tools to stay relevant as well. It’s become public knowledge now that for example, MalwareBytes uses AI to pen-test and help aid in ongoing solutions development to better clean and protect your machine from modern threats.
