Firefox Breached! Zero days and Critical Infrastructure intrusions

Firefox Zero day discovered

It was discovered that Firefox was targeted by a number of individuals exploiting a previously unknown vulnerability, a Zero-Day. Just yesterday it was noticed by Slovakian company and reported to Mozilla. Evidence points to it being used in multiple attacks so far. The danger of this exploit is that its a Remote code Execution. Allowing attackers to execute commands without permission, one of the worst kinds.

Luckily Mozilla has already released an emergency patch. They recommend that everyone using Firefox update their browser immediately. The vulnerability is mostly unexplored and while it has been reported in a number of incidents, its scope is still not well known. Because of this, the damage it can cause is unpredictable.

American Water utility company under attack

This is the latest in major utility companies in the United States coming under cyber assault. The companies computer billing systems needed to be entirely shut down. The operation of the companies water infrastructure has continued unimpeded. Fortunately it seemed to target something in the billing process of the company, however it was shut down quickly that could pose a serious risk to customers information.

The trend of major utilities being hit with cyber attacks continues to grow rapidly. The U.S government has taken a major interest in security for these institutions but the pace hasn’t slowed down. For customers, its very important to pay attention as it could directly impact your life or financials. disruptions to services could stop daily life in its tracks, or payment details can be stolen.

If you receive information about a compromise regarding one of these services ensure your personal information is secure. Should the services to power, water or gas be interrupted it also pays to have some sort of plans in place to keep living normally till it is restored.
