U.S Cyber Security director Calls for global cyber rules

The U.S Federal government has taken a massive interest in cybersecurity as of late. In recent years, massive investments in internships, security infrastructure, cyberwarfare prevention and more. In light of recent world events, and the increasing number of major data breaches, the U.S has been trying to reshape the worlds conversation around this topic. The latest move in that space happened Just recently.

The U.S National Cyber Director Chris Inglis made an appearance the Global Cybersecurity forum in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The Director is working to support the building of a new international coalition of nations and companies. The forum is a place to discuss the new and evolving challenges in cyberspace. During the panel Mr. Inglis spoke about how innovation has been taking precedence of security and how cooperation and resource sharing internationally is the only way forward to safeguard the Internet. Additionally he also spoke about generative AI. Stating that it has been used more by attackers and with great success. He warned against AI development without oversight potentially leading to severe damages.

The Cyber Security director was not the only one in Riyadh today, the Chief information security office of the U.S Department of Energy made an appearance. He also stressed the dangers to critical infrastructure and the massive increase in attacks using open source software in recent years.

This push for global unity in cyberspace has been the new focus of the current administration. It seems like the visit in Riyadh made good impressions and real agreement. This event also seemed to signal Saudi Arabia’s commitment to becoming a real player in global cybersecurity. Potentially signaling a warming of relations with the U.S after a frosty few years.

House Cyber security Scholarship that guarantees a job

Keeping with the topic of the Federal focus on cybersecurity, House of representative lawmakers are pushing a new bill called PIVOTT. This bill would provide scholarships and jobs to anyone who is accepted into the program. It is primarily designed for those who wish to transition into the cyber security field. This could be anyone from current students to those who are willing to return for a chance to earn skills and a job.

The program will start out small, but it will grow to a desired 10,000 per year in the next decade. Those who enter into the program will be enrolled in a two year schooling program paid for by the government. In return the government will require you to take a federal, state or local position working in the cyber field.

It is somewhat modeled after the ROTC program for the military. In the sense that the program will require certain things from you should you enroll in the program. You will be signing onto a contract to work for the government for 2 years once schooling completes. Though cyber security is difficult to enter into, most entry level position require a year or more of experience and this program will give you that.

Sometimes locking into contracts can be scary, however it is one of the few schooling programs which seems to guarantee a stable job after completion so it make be an awesome choice for some of you out there. Not only that, there is talk of granting security clearances to those who participate, which would be major boon for a persons resume. This legislation and others like it are becoming more common, and in the coming days we will see if this bill gains the funding it requires. For those interested in cyber security, things like this are major news, especially if you are not already in the field.
