The White House Cyber Initiative

Cybersecurity has been a big deal in the job market for years now. Once of the most sought after positions and the hardest field to get into. Currently the U.S has around 500,000 open cyber positions that need filled across the nation. This initiative aims to help fill those openings. The White house wants to change the perception that you need degrees or special training to get into the field. They also wish to continue encouraging more cyber job formation from the federal level.

Their plan involves several key steps, starting with a shift towards a skill-based approach. To do this, the government is updating its own standards to encourage other entities to follow suit while demonstrating the effectiveness of their new strategy. The White House then announced a $244 million dollar investment in registered apprenticeships to encourage hands on training. Finally the Office of the National Cyber Director has begun traveling to colleges and cyber centers to gather best practices, and discover innovative ways to propel cyber forward as a career.

The end goal is to get Americans to recognize that cyber is a real option for them. Along with the increase in apprenticeship/internship funding, expect to see more job fairs and position postings. If all works out many of these positions will start to become much more accessible for those interested.

Google anti-trust Lawsuit

This week google is in court fighting the U.S. Justice Department. This is the second case where the government has gone after google under anti-trust legislation. This first case (which discussed googles search monopoly) resulted in a victory for the Justice department, but not very many tangible changes. This time however should the Justice Department win this case they will require changes to the company. They seek to break up the sections of Googles ad business and force it to divest some of its Advertisement technology.

The Government accused Google of a campaign to condition and control digital advertising as well as elimination of rivals via acquisitions. This environment results in the ad market we currently live with, and it is what allows google to target ads the way they do. Should Google lose it will not cause irreparable damage to the company, however it could signal a change in the ad ecosystem. It may lead to an increase in ad diversity as well as the way ads are sold.

This being the second time this year the Justice Department has sued Google, we could be in for a much more aggressive policy from the government. Big tech companies define the way the internet is used today, if they are broken up or forced to change their ways our everyday lives could feel the impact. In this case, it could result in less predatory ads from Google and a more free market. However no one really knows just what impact it will actually have, so we will have to wait and see who wins.
