Microsoft's Daily Cyber Siege And E.U.-Meta Scuffle

Learn more about Microsoft's recent cyber announcement and the court battles between the EU and Meta.

Welcome Back!

Microsoft reports almost 600M cyber attacks every day!

The Tech Giant recently reported a staggering average of 600 million cyberattacks occurring daily, highlighting the increasing prevalence and sophistication of cyber threats. The company's analysis revealed that these attacks target a range of industries, with particularly high rates against sectors like government, technology, and healthcare.

In response to these threats, Microsoft emphasized the importance of proactive security strategies, including robust identity protection and threat detection solutions.

The company also noted that the surge in attacks is fueled by factors such as the rise of ransomware and the exploitation of vulnerabilities in software and systems. Microsoft also urged businesses to invest in security training for employees, as human error remains a significant vulnerability in cyber defense.

E.U. Court targets Meta’s personalized ads

Meta has long relied upon personalized ads targeted using harvested data. Its the cornerstone of their advertising strategy. This universal harvesting of personal data has been hitting a snag though, the U.S government has taken notice and started making moves to hinder this practice. The DOJ recently sued Google for monopolizing ad targeting, and the FTC Filed a scathing report on social media companies’ inadequate data protections.

However Europe is actually far more strict on user privacy than the United States. The GDPR (Europe’s flagship data protection regulations) force media companies to operate differently on that continent. Though apparently Meta has been riding on the edge of following the law. Just this October and E.U court has ruled Meta must restrict their personal data harvesting from serving targeted ads.

The ruling states a social media company cannot use user personal data for ad targeting indefinitely and without restrictions. There must be limits added to comply with GDPR or there will be consequences as labeled in the GDPR regulation itself. This ruling Applies to not just Meta, but all online Advertising companies. Considering Europe is a massive sections of Social media users the companies being forced to comply there may require them to change how they operate everywhere.

With this latest in a long string of bad news for ad based companies, we may be seeing the end of the personalized Advertising era, Especially if the U.S follows Europe’s path.
