The Scary Future of Datafication and Extended Reality
Is Technology Evolving in the Wrong Ways for Us?
Welcome back!
Today’s article will see us touch on how subtle the transition is with our daily activities slowly becoming more digitized. We’ve become accustomed to receiving monthly updates for all of our devices but just how much of that is actually beneficial for us?
Our subjects in this space today covers Extended Reality or otherwise known as XR and Datafication. These upcoming improvements go hand in hand due to datafication being used to gauge the changes necessary to improve virtual reality. However… your information has the likely side effect of not only improving a product but being sold to create more products.
X-Tended Reality
Extended Reality is essentially the combined fields of Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and Mixed Reality. It is all of the above and everything in between pretty much, basically you could transfer yourself to a different world from the comfort of your home.
Now you are probably wondering what could be bad about using such a device. We will say first that while using these XR devices could boost productivity and creativity they could also induce isolation from the outside world and start to infringe upon our normal activities in actual reality.
The introduction of everyday activities being achieved with the powerful assistance of XR devices has created a world in which Extended Reality is seen as an innovative technology that could improve the ways we meet each other, do everyday things, entertain ourselves, or even how to work our careers.
The long-term usage of these devices will begin to hinder how we interact with actual reality as we get used living our lives in the Extended Reality. If we are used to being in the Extended Reality to meet and talk to people, this could impact in actual reality how we talk to someone as the authentic expressions and energy isn’t matched in Extended Reality!
Entertainment wouldn’t be the same with the widespread use of XR devices as many places like movie theaters and concerts could be slowly phased out. A lot of people including myself would find it awesome to go to a live concert from their living room, but this could greatly impact the feelings of isolation from reality itself.
Asides from the effects on our social lives and health, another factor that is rising tremendously from XR devices is the datafication of our very own lives and how we live them. If you thought the social effects and other health issues were bad from using Extended Reality, imagine a world where everything you do in your life is collected as data for various purposes whether it be good or bad!
Datafication Station
The rise of datafication in today’s technology era has been tenfold. To explain datafication simply, it is taking every aspect we know about life and turning it into data. This also means that when everything is in the form of data, their original purposes can be transformed making the information into values of new form. This introduces the scary accurate pattern recognition XR devices have especially ones using AI.
Everything we do on these devices could be sent back in real time as insanely useful data. Not only could this information be used for helpful things like health patterns, but it could also be used for commercial greed by using and selling the information on the patterns of our private matters and activities!
We should be absolutely careful about how we use XR devices currently or in the future as they develop further. If you are someone who takes social and private matters seriously the use of an XR device could be deemed harmful in those aspects to you.
These devices are huge developments in technology and especially entertainment with all of the new possibilities from the comfort of one’s home. However, we must remember that while technology slips so easily into our lives there are factors about it that we must stay aware about!
